Product Information
-
Do I need to worry about fabric shrinkage?
Most of our shirts are made from 100% cotton, so some shrinkage is normal during the first few washes. To minimize this, we recommend washing in cold water and hanging to dry. If you follow these instructions, shrinkage should be limited to about 1–3% over the first 2–3 washes.
Note: Tailored garments (suits, sport coats, trousers) should never be machine washed. Please dry-clean professionally.
-
How do I know my dress shirt will fit?
Our off-the-rack shirts are developed with experienced master tailors and come in multiple sizes and body fits to accommodate a wide range of body types. If our standard sizing doesn’t work for you, we also offer an expanded sizing range through our Custom Shirt Program.
I'm not sure what size I wear in your garments. How can I figure out my size/fit before placing an order?
We recommend booking a phone appointment with one of our Product Specialists. Using your measurements, they can determine the best size for you.
Suits/Jackets: Based on chest measurement (e.g., 40” chest → size 40 jacket)
Dress Shirts: Based on neck measurement (e.g., 15.5” neck → size 15.5 shirt)
-
Can I order multiple sizes to try on?
We generally recommend ordering 1–2 items first to determine your best fit. Once you’ve found the right size, you can order more with confidence. If you’re unsure, book a Product Specialist appointment: Book Here
-
What does Vanity Sizing mean?
Vanity sizing is when garments are cut larger than the size on the label (e.g., pants labeled 32” that actually measure 36”). This can be misleading. Spier & Mackay garments are cut true-to-size, so depending on what brands you normally buy, you may need to size up in our products.
-
What is the difference between Dress, Sport, and Casual shirts?
Dress Shirts: Sized by neck + multiple sleeve lengths
Sport Shirts: Sized by neck, but with one standard sleeve length per size
Casual Shirts: Alpha sizing (S, M, L, etc.), cut shorter to be worn untucked
-
What garments are always brought back every season?
We release two seasonal collections each year (Spring/Summer & Fall/Winter). However, we always carry core products such as:
- Wool suits in navy, gray, and black
- White and blue dress shirts
- Oxford cloth shirts
-
How do I make a trouser swap request?
Our suits are sold as a standard Drop 6 (e.g., size 38 jacket comes with size 32 trousers). If you’d like a different trouser size, add a note in the comments at checkout. If available, we’ll swap them before shipping.
Note: Trouser swaps cannot be made after an order has been received and may not be available on Final Sale or Red Label suits.
-
What is the difference between Slim and Contemporary in your trousers?
Slim Fit: More tapered leg, shorter rise
Contemporary Fit: Slightly roomier through the seat and thigh, regular rise
-
What is the difference between Extra Slim, Slim, Contemporary, and Classic fit in your dress shirts?
Classic Fit: Most relaxed, generous room throughout
Contemporary Fit: Regular/standard fit with some shaping
Slim Fit: Tapered cut, closer to the body

-
How can I find out my body measurements?
We recommend visiting a local tailor or menswear shop for precise measurements. Key areas: neck, chest, waist, hips/seat, thigh. Compare these with our online size charts for best results.
-
What is the process of garment-dyeing?
Unlike standard dyeing (fabric dyed before sewing), garment-dyeing dyes the finished garment. This creates a softer fabric with richer color, subtle variations, and unique fades over time. You’ll find garment-dyed fabrics in our casual pieces like chinos, shirts, and outerwear.
-
What suit length should I get based on my height?

English Cut: British-inspired, structured shoulders with roping, tapered waist, ticket pocket, often available in peak lapel, three-piece, or double-breasted options
-
What are some details of your Red Label suit?
Our Red Label suits use 100% wool fabrics without any synthetics such as polyester. They also feature a half-canvas construction for a higher-quality garment that lasts longer and molds to your body over time for a personalized fit. Other notable details include sous bras underarm shields, double rear vents on the jacket, and non-functional sleeve buttons that allow for easy alterations at your local tailor.
-
How do Red Label suits fit?
Our Red Label suits feature a unique “Tailored” fit that is slightly different from our standard Slim & Contemporary fit suits. The jacket fits similarly to our Contemporary fit jackets, and the trousers are between a Slim & Contemporary cut that is designed for a slightly trimmer, more modern style.

Custom Shirts
-
Is every Made-To-Measure (MTM) pattern unique?
Not always. Our Made-to-Order (MTO) program is based on our existing off-the-rack (OTR) sizing patterns, so no new pattern is created. However, when you order a Made-to-Measure (MTM) shirt, our factory creates a unique pattern tailored to your specific body measurements—or measurements from a shirt you already own. This added customization is why MTM shirts are priced slightly higher than MTO.
-
What is the difference between Made-To-Order (MTO) and Made-To-Measure (MTM)?
Both offer customization, but they serve different needs:
Made-to-Order (MTO): Based on our standard OTR sizing. Ideal if you already know which size and fit works for you in our garments. You can choose from a wide selection of fabrics, collars, cuffs, buttons, and other details to create a shirt in your preferred size and fit. Great for customers who are happy with our OTR fit but want more variety in fabrics or style options.
Made-to-Measure (MTM): Adjusted from our standard sizing using your custom measurements. You can provide body measurements from a tailor or measurements from a well-fitting shirt. Best suited for customers who have difficulty with stock sizing or prefer a more personalized fit.
-
How does your Made-To-Order (MTO) program work?
MTO is built on our OTR sizing. We recommend trying some of our OTR shirts first to determine your best size and fit. From there, you can select fabrics, collars, cuffs, buttons, and other style details to create your shirt. It’s a simple way to design a custom shirt with the fit you already know works for you.
-
How long do custom shirt orders take?
Both MTO and MTM shirts are custom-made. Please allow 4–6 weeks for production and delivery.
For first-time custom shirt customers, we will only make one test shirt initially. Once the size and fit are confirmed, we’ll proceed with producing the remainder of your order. This ensures your final shirts are made to your exact fit.
-
Can I request changes not listed in the program?
At this time, we can only accommodate fabrics, styles, and details offered through our standard custom program.
-
What are the best fabrics for a formal or dress shirt?
For dress and formal shirts, we recommend classic, year-round fabrics such as poplin, fine twill, royal twill, or Panama weave. White is the most traditional choice, but light blues and subtle stripes are also timeless for business and formal wear.
-
What are the best fabrics for casual shirts?
For casual wear, fabric choice depends on the season:
Warm weather: linen, cotton-linen blends, madras checks
Cooler weather: flannel, corduroy, oxford cloth
-
What is oxford cloth?
Oxford is one of our most popular shirting fabrics, known for its distinct basketweave texture, mid-heavy weight, and slightly coarse hand feel. A staple of Ivy League and prep style, oxford shirts are usually designed with a button-down collar and breast pocket. They’re highly versatile—equally at home with a sport coat or with jeans and chinos.
-
What style options do you recommend for a dress shirt?
Collars: Spread collars like C2 Classic Spread or C7 Classic Full Spread
Fronts: PL1 Classic Placket or PL3 French Turn Placket (PL4 Hidden Placket works well with bow ties)
Cuffs: Button cuffs for versatility, French cuffs for formal occasions
Back: B0 (No Pleats) or B2 (Side Shoulder Pleats) for a clean look
Pocket: None for the most formal appearance
Colours/Fabrics: White is the most formal, blue is versatile, and lighter colours (pink, lavender) work well in warmer months. Best fabrics include poplin, twill, end-on-end, and Panama weave.
-
What style options do you recommend for a casual shirt?
Collars: Button-down collars (C3-K, C3, C22) are classic; spread collars (C2, C4, C7) are also popular
Cuffs: Button cuffs only
Fronts: PL1 Classic Placket, PL2 Narrow Placket, or PLP Popover for a unique twist
Back: B1L Centre Pleat with Locker Loop for a more casual look
Pocket: Optional—many casual shirts include one
Fabrics: Oxford, linen, flannel, corduroy, denim, chambray
-
What style options do you recommend for a tuxedo shirt?
Collars: C2 Classic Spread, C7 Classic Full Spread, or C13 Italian Spread (never button-down)
Cuffs: French cuffs are standard; F9 Cocktail Cuffs are a stylish alternative
Fronts: Choose from our tuxedo placket styles (stud-ready) or the PL4 Hidden Placket if you prefer buttons
Back: B0 (No Pleats) or B2 (Side Shoulder Pleats)
Pocket: None
Buttons: White river shell or mother-of-pearl
Fabric/Colour: Always white; recommended weaves include poplin, twill, end-on-end, and Panama weave

Made-To-Order (MTO) Suits & Sportcoats
-
What is the difference between Made-To-Order (MTO) and Made-To-Measure (MTM)?
Both programs offer a version of custom tailoring, but they differ in fit and process:
Made-to-Order (MTO): Based on our off-the-rack (OTR) sizing and measurements. This program is ideal for customers who have already tried our OTR suits and know which size and fit works best. You can choose from a wide selection of fabrics, jacket models, linings, buttons, pockets, and other style details to create a custom suit. MTO is perfect if you’re satisfied with the fit of our OTR garments but want more fabric and style options.
Made-to-Measure (MTM): Offers a more personalized fit through detailed body measurements. A unique pattern is created for you based on these measurements, resulting in a garment tailored specifically to your body. Because MTM requires in-person measuring, this program is only available in-store.
-
How does your Made-To-Order (MTO) program work?
MTO is built on our standard OTR sizing. We recommend trying on our OTR garments first to identify your ideal size and fit. From there, you can customize your suit by selecting fabrics, linings, buttons, pockets, and other style details. This program is designed for customers who already know their size and want the freedom to personalize their suit’s look and details.
-
How long do custom suit orders take?
Approximately 7–8 weeks for production and delivery. All custom garments are shipped directly from our factory to the customer.
-
Can I request fabrics or style details not listed on your website?
At this time, we are only able to accommodate fabrics, style options, and details offered within our standard custom program.
-
What fabrics would you recommend for a formal or business suit?
For versatility and longevity, we recommend year-round worsted wool in classic colours such as navy, grey, charcoal, or black. Solid fabrics are the most formal and adaptable, though subtle patterns like stripes, birdseye, sharkskin, and checks are also suitable for most professional environments.
-
What fabrics would you recommend for a more casual suit?
For warmer months, fabrics such as linen, cotton, and seersucker are excellent choices. For cooler seasons, tweed and flannel offer warmth and texture. Casual suits also allow for a wider colour palette, including brown, green, burgundy, and lighter seasonal tones.
-
What jacket models do you offer?
Standard: A timeless, versatile jacket suitable for year-round wear.
Normal Sportcoat: Features unpadded shoulders for a softer, more casual look.
Neapolitan Cut: Inspired by Italian tailoring, with wide notch lapels, a 3-roll-2 button closure, and unpadded shoulders.
English Cut: Inspired by Savile Row, with padded, roped shoulders and a trim waist for a structured silhouette.
Tuxedo: Designed for black tie and formal occasions, featuring satin-trimmed lapels for sophisticated elegance.
-
What is jacket canvassing and why does it matter?
Canvassing is the internal layer sewn between the outer fabric and lining of a jacket. It provides structure, drape, and comfort while molding to your body over time for a personalized fit.
Half-Canvas (standard): Runs from the shoulders to the waist. A balanced option that offers structure, comfort, and value.
Full-Canvas (upgrade): Extends the canvas through the full length of the jacket for superior drape, durability, and longevity.
Unstructured (optional): No internal canvas, giving the jacket a soft, relaxed feel—ideal for casual tailoring that wears more like a cardigan.
